|RHistory:|N Discovered 1739 by the French naval officer Jean Baptiste Loziert Bouvet, from whom the island was named. France did not claim the island.
In 1825 captain Norris disembarked and planted Union Jack. And in 1917 Norway occupied the island which Great Britain opposed. In 1930 Bouvet Island was recognized as a Norwegian dependency.
1977 Norway built an automatic meteorological station on the island.
